Sad Insider reports R.I.P MR..

Our friend Marc Rosenthal passed away yesterday

Very sad

Marc's love & loyalty to the game was apparent. He was so blog worthy and I'm glad he and I became friends over the years. He will be missed.

A Sad Insider will remain shut down until Monday in respect of our lost friend. As all we are is dust in the wind

  2. Another unique spirit and personality gone too soon.
All the nicknames, Horrablue, Two Belly,
I am at a loss for words...
My love to all those who know what it's like to lose someone and the many emotions that it stirs. We have each other. Until we don't. And I honor all those who I've come to know each and every game.

  3. Very sad news. Marc loved watching us all play because he couldn't. He loved the game. A really good guy, very misunderstood if you ever got a chance to learn about him. I'll miss seeing him at the park every day, and giving him a hug hello.

  6. Wow, a terrible surprise. I'm saddened that I'll never get to complain about his strike zone again. We all take so much for granted. Marc will be missed - LD

  12. If you play on competing teams for 20 years and, win or lose, sit on the bench afterwards to soak in the remains of the day with conversation, observations and lots of laughs, you get to know a person pretty well.

Marc and I laughed about getting old (it sucks especially if you want to keep playing ball), about the ups and downs of our league and often about being fathers. We agreed that being a parent was one of the very few things we loved more than Central Park softball. He was such a proud father.

He was funny and smart, a good combination for those sometimes raucous post-game conversations. And just a millimeter beneath all the competitive bluster and eccentricity was a truly nice man, who loved the game and the community of which he was an integral part.

I will miss his rusty gate of a voice, braying protests, "that was a HORRi-bull call". I suspect he will be missed by more people than he might have guessed. He was one of a kind and therefore, completely irreplaceable.

  13. It is a wonderful (and sad) coincidence that RR got a last word from Marc in his "Ebony and Ivory" post with Marc and Charlie Baily. And it breaks my heart to hear him talk about getting healthy for next season.

In my imagination, Marc is already oiling up his glove in a game somewhere beyond and getting on some poor, hapless umpire's strike zone before taking a nap between games in an endless season.

  17. Great Guy!!! I will miss hearing him call out, "NOW BATTING NUMBER 33-3-3-3-3!!!" It made me smile while I was batting because I knew it was him! Im glad Ricky video taped him, so you can check it out if you come to site in a few years and he is still there.

  19. I only saw this news now... as I'm looking to make contact with some of those crazy bastards from Friday pickups to ask a favor. I spent one summer and spring of unemployment and night work looking forward to days blagging my way into games and being welcomed with open arms (mostly) by Jimmy and the Locos... Spent plenty of time in the bleachers with the umps. Marc was a funny guy and a good one. RIP.
