The Curious Case of Coed

Besides being a pretty boy and Super Market tabloid poster child Brad Pitt is one hell of an actor. One of his more unique roles and movies was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

where his character ages and more importantly experiences life in reverse.

In my many Benjamin Button softball like travels, too many now, it seems I can no longer ignore the Curious Case of Coed Softball anymore.

Coed softball was once only an after thought, a place where non competitive men would play with butchy/ugly girls. Male chauvinists pigs like myself thought of it as corporate or "non competitive fun" thing that no one cared about. But that ignorant stereotype has long been eradicated.

To quote another Brad Pitt characters from another brilliant movie, Inglorious Bastards (probably his best) Lt. Aldo Raine the Co-Ed "Business is a Boomin'

Over the last 10-15 years Co-E softball popularity and enthusiasm has surged

where serious talented male and female athletes thrive and compete. One example is Ball Buster Manager Edwin "Cano" Diaz (now you know his government name people).

Cano's Sundays are busy

Cano can be on my team anytime

He has the love - for both men's and co-ed ball

Cano's team

plays in Lower Manhattan Softball League (B96 name) run by Softball Legend Jimmy Maresca

To me for many years that league was just a bunch of "other people" playing next to and sometimes annoying the more prestigious BASL. That's all changed now as the popularity of competitive and recreational Co-Ed has blown up with damn good players. Jimmy runs two league - Competitive and Arc and has more teams than many men leagues including the BASL.

So this got me Curios as to Why is Co-Ed softball so popular?

Top Ten Possible Reasons Co-Ed Softball popularity is a Bomin'

10. Women
had to post this sorry - no I'm not
All sexist shit aside, the women are really good players and in High Demand.

9/8/7/6. Club Softball All Rounded Up into one
  • 9 Drink
  • 8 Socialize
  • 7 Play
  • 6 Hang out
5. Play for Prizes
4. Family Time
Cano and Kristy/Couple Time

3/2 "Less Edgy" , "Less Ego" than All Male softball - which is refreshing
on that note perhaps the Number One Reasons Co-Ed Softball popularity is a Boomin'
1, This all leads to Fun.
I've been accused of not having "FUN" in softball... Got me Curious

The Will Remember Andy Strong

I don't know any sports fan who doesn't love the movie
Remember the Titans

This movie is the poster child for my saying "It's More Than Just a Game" The film has an interwoven complex plot consisting of racism, friendship, brotherhood, purpose, and tragedy is stitched together within the tapestry of a football season/game. That perfect season on the field made them and other people better off the field. That's why They did Remember the Titans.

This year on Sunday's our team is called Andy Strong.

For some reason (mostly because I'm weird), this season/team reminds me of the Movie Remember the Titans

Top Ten Reasons Andy Strong Reminds Me of the Movie Remember the Titans

10. In Remember the Titans two schools merged. Andy Strong is a Choice Parts Old School Merger.

fyi - Go Ahead Anonymous enjoy bitch

9. In Remember the Titans Coach Boone took Hall of Fame level Coach Yoast job. On Andy Strong Ricky took Rosenmiller job, and Rosenmiller is now the assistant head coach

fyi - Go Ahead Anonymous enjoy bitch

8. Andy Strong is currently undefeated (Titans no losses), but we are far from perfect both on and off the field. There is a lot of softball to go, but maybe like the team in the movie we can become better men with the good we do.

P.S I'm not afraid to talk about trying to win every game. Losses happen and winning in the playoffs is what counts, but along the way I want to win. Everyone does.

7.  To go Undefeated in the Titans, had to defeated the best coach Ed Henry (the Bill Bellichek of his time), To remain undefeated Andy Strong has to beat West who has two of the best softball coaches of all time - Dio and John

The Force is Strong with West

Don't let their Star Wars day (Awesome) at park fool you. These guys have won more championships than anyone I know. The are formidable, every Warrior need a worthy foe and every softball league needs a rivalry.

6. Haydeen Pantiere was in Remember the Titans as a little kid,
Your Son is getting beat like he stole something

and went on to grow up and become a known actress.
Save the Cheerleader Save the World

Alexandra and Caley are part of Andy Strong

What's Gonna Work Team Work

One day they will grow up as well (hopefully act better than Haydeen), but not up to be a cheerleader I hope.

5. I love the Strong Side Scene in Remember the Titans... the use of the word Strong reminds me of Andy Strong

Love that scene: "Let's Play Fellas!!!!!!!!!! Left Side!!!!!!!! Strong Side!!!!!!" .. corny nerd heaven

4. Remember the Titans had leadership from their players, coaches can only do so much. Andy Strong has leadership from Jrod, Mike Trenk, Richie Collado, and more. Like Remember the Titans, our players may not get along perfectly, but in the end they want a Victory.

3. Fun - Coach Boone was a dictator. Ricky is a dictator "FUN"

2. Controversy - Remember the Titans was the 1st racially integrated team and had to deal with serious issues. Andy Strong is full of controversies everywhere starting at the top and going all the way down. We have to deal with it
Beware the Dark Side Insider - There is Still good in

1.In Remember the Titans the team dedicated the Championship game to their injured teammate Gary Bertier.

Sunday May 21st, is league wide Cancer Awareness Day for the Big Apple League

West and Andy Strong are asking all league participants to wear something pink or blue and to make a team donation/contribution to Andy Santana and his fight against cancer. Please post this

The WESTLANDERS are wearing pink t-shirts with Team Andy on them

and Andy Strong will be wearing their jersey's (finally) that day.  Both teams will be collecting funds prior to the game. Please contact me, Dio, or John Sheppard for more information.

It is recommended that a player(s) from each team should be present at the field prior to the game to show unity, support, and love for our friend

Win or Lose  They Will Remember Andy Strong

Central Park Softball Next Generation.. Insider 2.0

I saw this picture on Facebook and it made me smile

as 2017 has been off to a volatile start. It also reminded me of my nerdy love for Star Trek. You see as a kid I was a big Original Star Trek fan

as I watched the reruns every Saturday at 5pm on Channel 11 (Channel 13 was the highest back then).

As a teenager, at first I didn't even wanna watch or accept the Next Generation Series

because I so badly wanted to hold onto the past, the old cast.

Eventually I finally came around to the new series took the principals of the Original series
  • Exploration - both of other worlds and within ourselves
  • A Future where making yourself a better person was the goal, not making more money
  • Equality
  • Building Relationships.
and made them better by using Fantasy and Drama to

  • Build New Modern Relationships
  • Meeting New Races
  • Learning what it means to be Human

  • Exploring Modern issues - racism, oppression , assimilation

and now 23 years after the Next Generation a New Series Star Trek Discovery begins to build off the Legacy, forge it's own identity, and explore what it means to be Human.

This is the normal progression in life where one generation passes the Baton/Torch to the next and yes this is also true in Softball.

Unfortunately, it's not happening enough in softball especially in the
Central Park Big Apple Men's Softball League.

This is the league membership the last 4 years
  • 2013 - 12 - Peak.
  • 2014 - 6 teams, all good at least; but down 50% people sick of open pitching bias.
  • 2015 - 8 Teams - 3 really good teams, 2 competitive teams, 3 horrible teams
  • 2016  - 5 teams - 3 Good, 1 Solid, 1 pathetic
The trend is undeniable, but this situation is salvageable if everyone admits and accepts the following:

The original series... original cast.. AKA the Old days ...are over
  • About 75%-80% of Contact is retired
  • Cardinals - Ralph wants play for money and sick of driving guys around.
  • Rangers - Longtime loyal Core BASL team has players still in park playing elsewhere.
  • West - John Shepard retired. Players also scattered throughout the BASL universe.
  • Gotham/Revolution  - Ironically, knocked out by open pitching and when league went to modified quit. Bad space time continuum timing I guess.
In Star Trek many original series characters like Spock, Scotty made appearances in the new series and embraced the future. However, it was clear the Past was the Past and it was time to move forward. In the BASL many original players like Mike Trenk, Chucky R, Bennett, Marty, and Jack Oppenheimer will make appearance in the new generation league, but it is clear the old days are over, EMBRACE AND HELP THE FUTURE.

As for longtime BASL powerhouse and reigning champion, Choice Parts, the question they should ask themselves Is there No Country for Old Men?. When I say that I do not mean that the team is old; Since the league switched to modified the Parts Won the 2016 Championship and appeared in the 2015 finals. Hardly signs of on field decay.

What I mean is there enthusiasm for the league is old and stale. As a former Parts player I understand:

  • Rosenmiller not around as much. He's not playing mornings either. Team apathy starts with him. He needs to move either move forward or retire, It's just a Choice.
  • John Brown banned. Heart of team for many years. Guys liked open fast pitching style too.
  • Other legacy players Artie , Eddie Brown, Doc, Lou 22, Mickey Peckins not around or on different teams. Different Vibe
  • Mercenary players replaced long time guys mentioned above. Different vibe thing again
  • Above competition and rivals no longer around. No real threats.

In the Next Generation of BASL, will they fit or will they be simply lost in space? Again the Choice is theirs.

The Truth is for the league to survive a new generation (new blood) of Central Park teams

must rise to Discover what makes Softball special in Central Park

So far Softball's Star Fleet academy has 2 new cadet teams. We need more valuable crew members to join as it is Time for a New Softball Generation to Boldly Go to go play on the best place on earth Central Park

Here are the 2017 Details:

Central Park Big Apple Softball League

The 2017 league fee is only $850

This represents tremendous value as teams get:

  • To play on the nicest fields/venue in all NYC in front of a live atmosphere full of fans, tourists and true New Yorkers

The Value can also be seen as the league provides:
  • Permits,
  • Doubleheaders every Sunday
  • Guarantee approx. 22-28 regular season game schedule plus Playoffs
Forget about all those greedy leagues that sucker you in with small money prizes and make you play in terrible fields under inhumane conditions with no competitive balance.

If you love softball this is the league for you as this league will pay off tremendous softball dividends and growth in the form of:
  • Competition
  • Rivalries
  • Effort
  • Passion.
This is where softball is at:
  • Invest in softball.
  • Invest in yourself.
