We all know about or use Ban deodorant.
It keeps you dry and prevents body odor. Good stuff in life and especially in softball we need all the deodorant possible b/c it's hot and dirty out there.
Sometimes the radio will ban an artists music b/c its lyrics are too obscene.
Like Uncle Luke and 2 live crew back in the day.
Certain criminals are so dangerous that they are banned from society and their face is plastered on a poster so that authorities can hunt them down and keep them from harming the public.
Softball's version of a ban comes in the form of a modified pitcher's ban list.
Here are the modified pitcher's ban lists in two of the cities biggest, strongest and most competitive leagues - Inwood and EMS

A league is either Modified or it isn't, there is no in between.
If any or all of these pitchers are in your league, your league is not modified.
These lists were formed to prevent pitchers that do not conform to ASA pitching standards from "slinging " in a modified league. These lists are not perfect and sometimes pitchwers sneak through but they are eventually weeded out and banned.
Stop the slingers before it becomes a real problem.
Competitive balance will be compromised.
UMPIRES will not call illegal pitchers, they just wont - its on the commissioner to stop illegal pitchers immediatley.

ReplyDeleteYou're a good guy but I must disagree. The problem is that no one has a clue was the ASA Modified Pitching Rule is, period. It's a very clear, rule. The pitcher's arm cannot break. He can go as high as he wants. If he can touch the sky, more power to him. The rules state this clearly. His back foot must maintain contact with the rubber until the release. There is no crop hopping, there is no rocking. His first move must be to home plate and his back foot must be visible at all times. This means no crossing over. Also, his shoulders must be square to home plate. It's a very simple rule. Too many bobos have this dumb "9 O'clock" rule that they learned in someone's basement. If you want, I'll send you the rule book, free of charge.

ReplyDeleteThe "9 o'clock" term is used to simplify a complicated (not simple) rule. You cannot lift your arm higher than 9-10 o'clock without being illegal. Try this: stand up straight, lift you arm backwards with your palm facing down - it wont go much more than "9". Now try the same thing and turn your palm up and as you lift your arm - woo hoo look high it can go! Thx for the book offer, but we have the rule book.
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE RULES ARE IF THE LEAGUES AND UMPS ARE TOO BIG O PUSSIES TO ENFORCE THEM.

ReplyDeleteThough you're right, I for one am happy to hit against these guys. Sure, they own me, and yes, their teams tend to win a disproportionate number of games when they're on the mound, but as we get older, it's harder and harder to find real competetion and challenges on the field, and I, for one would rather strike out against one of these guys than smack around some old timer throwing junk.
But the league should come out and admit that anything short of windmill is legal, and end all the griping.
Rick, Blondie & Co, there is no such thing as 9 O'Clock modified. Where is this in the ASA rule book? It doesn't exist.
ReplyDeleteJuan, as for your posting think about it. If you were to follow this 9 O'clock rule as simply as you stated in your posting who would be allowed to pitch? Pretty much no one. The 9 O'clock rule would eliminate Castillo, Freddie the Little Unit, Crazy Lou aka the Commish, etc, etc.... Pretty much everyone goes past nine.
What's comical about these pitching debates is that we are so caught up with the arm and no one is concerned with a pichers feet. So many of these leagues that follow this BS 9 O'clock rule will allow pitchers, to rock, take a step back, forward, break dance, ball juggle (deceiving the batter), and take step forward but as long as they don't go past 9 O'clock he's good.
EMS league's banned list? Are we serious even posting this up here? That's a joke! CJ is a clown who doesn't know the pitching rules. Up until 2-3 years ago he had never seen the asa rule back and at that time he didn't know where the pitching rules were in the back. Illegal pitchers in EMS, it's interesting who a pitcher can be legal if you serve on the board. EMS league, Kakito is legal but not Ced???
Simply said, Cedeworks is the perfect example of what a modified pitcher is.

ReplyDeleteWhat you say is true. For most people, they are not flexible enough to get higher than 10 O'clock, standing straight up. However, no one pitches like that. If you bend and rotate, you can easily get to twelve o'clock without breaking your arm. Perfect case: Jimmy Shook, Ced, John Miranda.
It's only hard to enforce a rule when you don't know it. 99 Percent of the umps don't know the rule.
This list is a Joke !!! Zorro is 75 years old now and he throws modifed , and half of the guys on this list ARE modified , its just that they throw with velocity ,so you and all the shitty teams cry until they get banned, i disagree i prefer to win my championships against the best out there, otherwise it dont mean shit.Great pitcher make better leagues and comp, i hate high scoring softball beer league shit.
