Not Visigoths

Before a hopeless battle it is somewhat of a military tradition for a captain to tour his ship. In softball terms, I wouldn't call the battle Diesel faced today hopeless, but it was certainly daunting. We had put ourselves in a single elimination game position against O'Hanlos and if victorious would then have to play defending champion Choice Parts immediately thereafter in the finals. Not easy but still a chance.

As everyone knows anything can happen in a single elimination game and anything did happen today as we lost. We had hopes of playing the role of the Visigoths coming over the seventh hill and over throwing the Evil SB Roman Empire, but never made it that far. The only civilisation that ended was our own and now we can only turn the page of softball history.

Maybe a tour wouldn't have been a bad idea as now there is nothing. It's cold out there when you face personal and team failure. Very cold.

P.S. Have fun with this one Mr. Anonymous

  1. Welcome to my losers lounge! I know the feeling. Watched your game from the sidelines and in my opinion the game was very winnable. I recognized that after 3 innings and a 4-0 deficit Gil did not have it and Edgar Jr. should have been brought in. Your shortstop unfortunately had a rough game. The following inning and down 9-2 Jimmy Bitros went up to Edgar and told him to get ready. Edgar's response "This is Gils game". Huh? Is this anyway to support your team? Are you blaming Gil for the loss or are you pissed at your manager for not starting yourself? I don't care what you do on a team, your team comes first and you must support your team in thick or thin. At one point Gil also brushed off Jimmy when he was coming out to the mound to possibly replace him (must be tough to have a pitchers mentality). I think in the future Jimmy needs to really address these tough issues to help benefit his team.

    PS: Ralphie hit awesomely...
I will stay anonymous, but just call me a sideline critic (not on the Diesel team but rooted for you guys anyway). Great season guys!

  3. I too was there sitting near Edgar Jr. when Jimmy went up to him and asked him to warm up. At the time Diesel was only down by 4 runs and was beginning to come back. Edgar Jr. basically told Jimmy I'm not going in. Being Latino my self I understand maschismo but sometimes both pitchers have to do what's best for the team. If one pitcher is having an off day and is walking too many and getting hit hard he should do the right thing even if it means comming out of the game. As far as Johnny Carter'errors at shortstop they didn't help matters but sometimes bad things happen and the pitcher can't let errors take him out of the game. I also agree that Ralphie hit awesomely and had a great attitude. I use to play on a team with Ralphie and he is a great teammate.

  6. Gil is a joke. Guy thinks he is an all world softball. Not to mention he always has a puss on his face. The word "team" is not in his vocabulary. Rick I know you are friends with him, but please stop constantly D-riding him.

  7. As someone who was fortunate to have Gil pitch on Diesel, I couldn't disagree more with the anonymous comment calling him a joke. Gil is not only a great player but is a perfect gentleman in every way. And I feel the same way about Edgar Jr.
Regarding Edgar Jr's decision not to relieve Gil in the 5th inning of our game...sure I was disappointed but figured he had his reasons. Edgar came up big for us all year ncluding throwing 3 shutouts, 2 of them comming against Lucky's and Brother Jimmy's. I would be proud to have Gil and Edgar playing for any team I manage. They are both winners with heart.

  9. john brown throws sidearm whoever approved him for this league does not understand the rules. he is clearly the best pitcher in this league by a wide margin. this is because he is allowed to throw sidearm. why cant the other 11 teams that are getting beat by this guy call for a vote on wheather he should be allowed to pitch. the motion that got approved is not the same release he uses on sunday. how long are we going to let his manager call the shots and run our league? jeff markus cant even speak a word at our league meeting. rosemillers money runs this league and we all know he pays john brown. the other 11 teams should stop being afraid to speak up and have the courage to bar him from our league like he is in many others. stop being afraid of john rosenmiller and his money. lets just run a fair league withan equal playing field. maybe they can put a statue of jb somewhere in central park. 11 other teams can vote him out and make it a fair league once again.

  11. Would Rosenmiller let Brown pitch for another team or is he only grandfathered for HIS team........
