Permit Me to Introduce Myself

Today I attended a Public Hearing

at the very nice Chelsea Recreation Center regarding the following rule amendment that impacts us all

"For applications received during the relevant application period, the Parks Department will first consider Youth Recreation (under 18) permit requests before any Adult Recreation permit requests. Adult applications will be considered after"

The City requires public hearings to institute new policy, but the truth is that it has been voted upon and already decided beforehand. They were pretty much just collecting comments and opinions.That's why many interested parties were well represented and on hand

to express their thoughts on this issue and the importance of the Power of the Permit.

Youth Advocates stated their case

Now that their permit monopoly is threatened other tried to "work something out"

Now - Boooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if work something out means join my league, just wondering.

Admirably, Adult Softball Advocates AKA "Fievrues" stood up and gave more genuine appeals

for the love of the game and the city we live in.

While I am glad the permit process is under going long overdue changes by not just "grandfathering" request, there is a clear and present danger in a general broad Youth Leagues come first policy. What if a newly formed youth league forces a good loyal law abiding tax paying permit holder to lose their privileges? Is that fair? Of course not. No one wants to lose their permit. What it means for the future - who knows?

I have dealt with the Park's Department for 13 years and they have improved, but they still need help with this and the following issues:

Permit Costs have increased 50%, but they have very little weekend staff due to budget cuts. This is a contradiction. Very frustrating. Poor perception
Lack of Staff - makes it difficult to check on field use and provide proper maintenance.
Youth Leagues needs should be more closely examined as this could be a seasonal or time related issue. Weekends are a challenge.
Other Policy Issues that should change "Maximum time that any adult single-permit holder/league may control a field is set at 32 hours a week, per park." There is no limit or extra cost for holding a certain number of permits. This has created monopolies who hoard the fields, provide a lousy product, and over charge NYC residents/companies for very right to play on the fields they pay taxes on. This makes no sense. Institute a permit cap number.
Another Questionable Policy - "The Park's Department reserves the right to require clean-up bond and/or liability insurance for the use of the field." Some leagues can't afford this.

This is a wonderful city it would be a shame if we were not Permitted to play anymore.

Well the truth is right now I ain't doing a damn thing because I am unemployed, but "Once Upon a Time" I had a career. I was a bond analyst. Mortgage-Backed Securities bond analyst to be exact, yeah I am one of the motherfuckers that ruined the country.

Lately I've been trying to get back into the bond game but can't crack the lineup - no worries - I will. But on my journey toward reestablishing myself I can't help but notice the similarities between U.S. bond market and baseball/softball. Huh? Did I just write that ? And yes while I am drinking while writing this, the parallels between the two are sobering. I don't even need to add Barry Bonds

to this conversation to connect the lines. I know that on the surface they seem very different, but if you look deeper and understand/appreciate the rules and strategies, there are many common elements between the bond market and playing ball.

Top Ten Bond Market and Softball Similarities

10. Bullies and Thugs in Both - Some wear ties. Some wear hoodies. Intimidation is their game. Same shit. Just worry about what you do.

Classifications - The bond market consists of a great number of types of securities - U.S. Treasuries , Corporate, High-Yield , Mortgage-Backed Securities ,Asset-Backed Securities ,Agency , Municipal Bonds, Collateralized Debt Obligations. Softball consists of many different styles of play - Arc, Lob, Modifed, Windmill, Sling. The classification in both is broken down by the kind of pitch thrown.

8. Competition - Both are driven by competition. Where can I get the best return on my financial, time, and pride investment? Compare. Compare Compare.

7. Knowledge is Power - The Bond market is tricky, but like baseball rules, understanding the basics takes the mystery out of them. Educated guesses and interpolations apply.

6. Mathematical Statistics - Bond Market investors want to know key stats like yield, to determine a bond's expected return so they can make an investment decision, Players/managers want to know their key stats like batting average, on base percentage, and earn run average to gauge performance and predict future results.

5. Clutch - Pressure is a privilege as meeting strict deadlines and stepping up to the plate in key situations a must in both.

4. Benchmarks - bonds and players are both valued relative to a benchmark. For example, a 10-year Treasury might be used as the pricing benchmark for a 10-year corporate bond issue. While players are evaluated relative to the performance of their peers. i.e. Catchers stats are compared to other catchers
3. Curves - Bond pricing curves are constructed using the yields/rates of underlying securities with similar maturities. In baseball/softball, a savvy pitcher will construct and develop a good curve to give himself an edge.
2. Risk - In both you expect a large return for risk, but you also pay a price. In the Bond Market , the riskier the investment the larger the return/spread. In softball, taking chance like missing a cut-off man can open squash a rally or open up a pandora's box. Managing Risk is crucial.

Distraction Tactic - Playing Dirty

I've fixed softball fields and shoveled snow and no matter which way you slice it - It's hard work. Today I was suppose to go workout with someone, but the inclement weather cancelled that fun activity and left me the humbling task of earning spare cash by shoveling snow for my building.

This was going to be a decent workout so I set out on the task minding my own business

when my neighbor from across the street came over and asked me "Have you been out here for a while?" I though he was going to compliment me, but I was shocked when he told me his door was kicked in and robbed, and asked me if I noticed anything.

I was shocked and felt so bad, like the feeling when someone gets their bag stolen during a softball game because everyone is so into the game that they are distracted and the thief swoops in.

I told him that earlier I noticed a truck with the word "limitless" with city workers cleaning up in front of his neighbors house, but thought nothing of it except, damn I wish this guys could help me. Crazy. Those bastards used that as a cover and distraction for robbing a good man's home in broad daylight

"In the bag" .. Political Self Hitting .. Hurting the Best League Around

You ever begin a softball season knowing that there is no way whatsoever in hell you can lose your league? I mean no way you can lose. Zippo. Nada. It literally is "in the bag" There can be a variety of reasons for this:

Confidence in your skill and teammates.
Your team is stacked with hitters and no else has pitching. No mound threats
You pay for the best players. You have an edge.
Your team may not be the greatest ever, but you know everyone else sucks.

I could list other reasons, but of the top four that I mention above the worst of the bunch is by far #4 "our team may not be the greatest , but everyone else sucks" because it is a noncompetitive environment. Winning in those leagues don't have any flavor or meaning. It's all over before it begins and the league as a whole suffers and eventually falls apart.

This very same thing is happening right now in the presidential election where the Weak GOP field is giving Obama no competition. Now wait a minute, people could point to the struggling economy and say the President as vulnerable, perhaps, but look at the Republican candidate field and you don't yet see a viable alternative.

Let's look at the All Star's :

Texas Gov. Rick Perry - he wanted to "stay in Iraq". Dumb. Guess what he's already out and announced he was backing Gingrich. Speaking of which
Newt Gingrich - after being out of the race he's back in it despite all the mud slinging about his ex-wives and his "ghetto language quote" .Gingrich would not make a good baseball GM as he does not value the Latin market. Ignorant
Ron Paul - He knows he can't win, so why is he running? Simple Power. He's flexing on the GOP by threatening to withhold his followers' votes. His goal is to force the GOP to pay the price of his support which is an isolationist views on foreign policy, revising the Patriot Act, and limiting presidential power. His position are not those of a Republican Party, and if he defects for an independent run then that will result is a re-election boost to Barack Obama as the GOP loses votes. Bottom line he doesn't give a fuck about America. No one takes him seriously.
Rick Santorum - has a history of ignorant comments, and being a Teebow "Jesus guy. Whatever he has been surging and winning primaries. He's conservative and that will help with Tea Partiers. But he gets distracted easily and stoops to mudslinging against Romney by comparing him to Obama by saying"Why would we ever vote for someone who is just like Obama?". Mudslinging shows low character.
Mitt Romney - he was ahead for a while but now its a dogfight. He's more moderate and a business man but he proposes/ says a lot of dumb shit like:
(1) Belittling Obama's $1,000 tax cut for typicalmiddle-class families, by calling it a "little Band-Aid.". Too bad his plan would give that same family just $54, savings even he admitsis "not a huge tax cut." Stupid
(2) Doubled down on the idea to "let Detroit gobankrupt," even though the president's rescue of the auto industry savedmore than 1.4 million American jobs up and down the supply chain, leading to arenaissance in the American car industry.
(3) Said he would let the foreclosure process "hit thebottom." so investors can swing in and make a quickbuck. Isn't that what got us in trouble in the first place? He has repackaged the same policiesthat caused the financial crisis -- mistakes like making the middle class payfor tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations and letting Wall Streetwrite its own rules so big bankers can make millions while gambling witheveryone Else's economic security. Foul
(4) Backed the right-wing Republican budget that eventually endMedicare as we know it, gut Social Security and slash funding for highereducation. So much for growing old.
(5) Criticized the president for ending the war in Iraq, saying he wouldrather leave 30,000 troops on the ground with no clear mission or plan forwithdrawal. Not your son there I guess?

Honestly, about 6 months ago I thought Obama was done, but in this league there is NO way he will lose. Its in the bag, as Obama is self hitting and none of his competitors can make a play. While I am an Obama supporter deep down I know that this lack of competition will hurt the best league in the world - The United States of America. Just for once I wish voting didn't come down to the lesser of two evils.

SB Cocoon

Back in the 80s the movie

highlighted the beauty of the human spirit through the story of a group of trespassing seniors who swim in a pool containing alien cocoons and are re-energized with youthful vigour.

The game of baseball/softball also serves as a cocoon. When I hear older players say "the game keeps me young , keeps me alive" I am often reminded of Hall of Famer Roy Campanella quote “You gotta be a man to play baseball , but you gotta have a lot of little boy in you too.” One of my favorite parts about the game is that while the actual game is being played time in the real world is irrelevant. However, time is a factor in the game in the form of age. The value of youth

on the field cannot be understated, but this game has a certain mystical ability to make a participant feel young inside regardless of age. Ironically this fountain of youth effect can be found not too far from Ponce De Leon Boulevard in Miami Fl., at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center (softball in Florida?). On every Tuesday and Thursday, Los Veijos immerse themselves in a softball cocoon where they take batting practice,

play competitively to win,

have fun,

One player is 94 year old outfielder

OK they have special age rules like 6 outfielders, two home plates, and flags

placed in centerfield that indicate fair territory, but what really matters is that for a few hours they feel young again thanks to the softball cocoon.

While I have not posted a blog for a while that does not mean the fire that burns inside me

has subsided. It may be the so called "off season", but the passage of time has made me realize that the passion that I dedicate to this post can't be put out by dead of winter. This forum is my outlet, my voice, my soul, and it is ready to be reignited. I thank my community for patiently waiting for softball's Pinocchio to poke his nose back into the game and, as always, I will endeavour to provoke thought, inspire change, and challenge the status quo.

While our softball cup does not runneth over with games in January, it is the time of year where many of us start to prepare for the upcoming season in a variety of ways some of which include:

(1) Self Reflection - look for Solutions from Within

(2) Practice - honing skills and conditioning

(3) Creative Fund Raising - jerseys and league fees need funding in 2012

(4) Playing in Midnight Madness tournaments in secluded locations to get a SB fix

Inevitably someone you know will ask "how many days until pitchers and catchers"? That's when the "On" button goes off inside and you get that itch to compete, that fire, that desire for revenge, that something to prove. Soon the cup will runneth over and you will get that chance.

I don't care of this happens a lot on the NFL, their is no excuse for it. Show some class and make your fans happy and while I accepted weeks ago that the Jets are mediocre , all I want for Christmas is a win over the Giants and New Years Day victory over the hated Fish.

Silence is Deafening

Most of the sounds associated with the game are clearly distinguishable:

The popping of the mitt
Crack of the ball off the bat
Umpire Calls
Cheering, booing, and arguing by fans, players, coaches and goons

But sometimes silence within the game is much more meaningful and deafening. I've noticed things have a funny way of getting awfully quiet during key spots like:

Dramatic Home Run or its inverse shocking strikeout
Borderline pitch framed by a catcher
Hesitant call by umpire
Tense game ending situation
Great defensive play made out of nowhere or horrendous error on the routine
A Manager makes a move or better yet no move.

The silence may only be momentary and quickly broken, but its profound effect is still felt. I know I'm being a bit of drama queen as I spit my heart through this blog, but I really do believe that that eerie split second of silence intensifies the significance of the moment.

The dramatic effect of silence was on full display in the real world today as the Federal Reserve Bank voted 9-to-1 to make no changes to the central bank's ongoing stimulus policies and renewed its pledge to keep interest rates at record lows "at least through mid-2013." They did nothing because they acknowledged the economy's future remains on pins and needles as: "the unemployment rate remains elevated" and "strains in global financial markets continue to pose significant downside risks." Stocks fell for a second straight day on the Fed silence, as it served as a deafening reminder that no short term fix is over the horizon.

So who do we break this silence? That's President Obama's job (I highly recommend you watching these two video links) as he recently spoke on 60 minutes about being under the gun and his vision. He knows he can't afford to be quiet as he has a country to run/fix and an election to win. For now this is all noise and perhaps silence is best, as all that really matters is job creation, as actions speak louder than words.

Part of the reason I am so fucked up in the head is that I went to Catholic school

for thirteen years as my parents sent me an extra year just to piss me off. I understand why my parents sent me to parochial school, but ironically this oppressive over kill atmosphere pushed me away from the church as I've challenged the catholic way of thinking and formed my own opinions and beliefs.

Now even though I've lost my religion over the years one of the things I love about this country is constitutional guaranteed right of "Freedom of Religion" as provided in First Amendment. Everyone can choose their own "leap of faith" without fear of persecution. Religious freedom is an integral part of our society and manifests itself in many ways, one of which is through sports. For example who many times have you seen this sign at a game

People often mix religion and sports. Hell I know I do as everyone who reads this posts knows I deeply believe in the softball gods

Recently the remarkable success of Tim Tebow

has me thinking about the sports-religion connection

All joking aside all this guy does is win

Sorry I couldn't resist as those videos were mad funny but they also illustrate that while the 1st Amendment allows religious freedom without legal persecution it does not stop the court of public opinion from casting a preconceived guilty verdict.

Personally, I think Tebow has been lucky and hiding behind a good defense, but that I must admit I have grown to respect his leap of faith and confidence. He doesn't care about what anyone says about him or his religious beliefs as all he does is win.

Forgoing Free Agnecy and looking for a Lifetime Extension

When a MLB player's contract expires they become a "free agent"

At that point they can sign with any team that desires and can afford their services. Common sense dictates that during free agency a player looks to sign a contract that offers them the most money for the longest period of time. Contract terms all vary depending on the player's age, ability, statistics, position, comparable contracts, and the overall market place. Besides the money, perhaps the next biggest stumbling point in negotiations is length of contract as the longer a deal goes the higher the risk of injury and poor/diminishing performance by the athlete. Logically teams prefer to offer shorter (1or 2 year) deals, but all the top free agents want long term commitments (5 years and beyond).

In the real world, I was once a single free agent, but 5 years ago today I signed a marriage contract

and I just wanted to declare that I have no intention of going real world free agent and am looking for a lifetime service contract extension from my amazing wife - Astrid!!!!!!!!

1977 - I was a little kid but Mets Salary dumped Seaver - team would suck for years
1990 - Darryl Strawberry was not resigned - AGAIN team would suck for years
2011 - Reyes deemed to expensive and injury risk to resign - AGAIN - team will suck for years

As a free agent shortstop in his prime, Reyes was a rarity. The 28-year-old had one of the finest seasons of his nine-year Mets career in 2011, winning his first batting title and posting the fourth season in which he was worth about six wins above replacement. He has all 5 tools, he can hit, hit for power (extra bases), speed, defense, and a strong arm. For that skill set he will receive $102M over the first six years of his contract, and has a $4MM buyout on a seventh year option. Can't blame a brother for getting paid.

I'm a Met fan and everyone knows I loved but recognized Jose Reyes flaws.

as he was frequently injured and more importantly not old school approved for his on field celebration/antics. Old school veterans like Keith Hernandez hated him, most Yankee fans hated him for the Jeter SS comparisons, the Phillies hated him, hell whole the National League East hated him (ironically the Marlins tried to beat him up several times but hypocritically signed him), and finally he completely shit on the fans in his last game as a Met

This whole situation reminds me of the famous Ralph Kiner story about being traded to the Cubs. Kiner played for the last place Pirates and was clearly their best player. He went in to ask for a raise and legendary Pirate general manager Branch Rickey (notoriously cheap) told him, "We finished last with you, we can finish last without you." He was then traded. Same shit with Reyes. Met ownership is broke and committed to rebuilding. Rebuilding means you are going to suck for a while. In the long run, this is probably a good smart thing, but just the prospect of waiting a long time AGAIN hurts.

One of the highest compliments you can give a player is call him a great teammates. Softball/Baseball is a game of failure and it helps to have good teammates that are honest and supportive to help you through the hard times. Life is no different as the saying goes "that's what friends are for".

Recent Blogs have me starting to lose my sense of humor as everything is so tense and gloom. I get my fair share of blog comments that usually run the full spectrum from funny to sad, bland to controversial, ignorant to brilliant and so forth. Recently, I have gotten an overwhelming amount of positive comments from my fellow Blog Mates that have me feeling much more upbeat, calm, and relaxed.

Comment # 1 - Keep The Faith Ricky. You're too good of a person not to reach your goals. Sometimes it just takes longer than we want.

Comment #2 - Oh, Ricky. I know the wave that's crashing in on you right now. And I know more than a few people (myself included) feeling trapped by the times we are living through. Bad economy and a political environment that seems intent on making it worse. Then winter comes and no more ballgames and since the game is what some of us have to make the harshness of life recede for a bit, hopelessness can start to overwhelm. Don't despair, my friend. There is always something you can do without having to ask anyone's permission. I've decided to use the next three months to acquire some new skills that might make a difference in my economic situation by the time spring arrives. In the meantime, I'm taking every scrap of a job I can dig up and working for less money than I have had to take for 20 years. But right now, it's better than nothing. And by the time I've taken a few classes, spring will be here. And with it, renewal of the game and who knows, lots of other possibilities. As JIM SAYS ABOVE, KEEP THE FAITH, Ricky. Better days are coming and you are not alone.

Comment #3 - I don't knowbut from reading his post addressing your concerns he sounds like someone who is going to achieve great success in the business world. He is a realist, a go getter and an individual that will do what it takes to get ahead in spite of the obstacles ahead. He has a spirit that is positive and contagious. Good luck

Comment #4 - Remember Ricky, you're never too old to learn new things away from the business world. At 49 I learned to play guitar and now I play every day as I work from home. There are probably many things you're not involving yourself with that you could because of the stresses you speak of. Take a deep breath and step back. Things come easier that way. Find other things until the right thing comes along in the business world. You're a great guy. trelax. It'll come when you stop looking so hard. Distract yourself.

Comment #5 - I hear you Ricky. As it's been said before, every one of us has our own struggles. Don't feel sorry for yourself. Get some rest. Clear your mind. Remind yourself what it is you want, and then do the things you think you need to do to get there. It can be done.

Comment #6 - Times are hard Ricky right now and you are not alone. Take some time to reflect on what makes you happy in life. My suggestion would be if you can get away for a few days and relax, maybe a different setting is what you need. Also if you have time volunteer at your local hospital, or community center;sometimes just keeping busy can help you focus. Good luck and remember have faith.

Next Year will soon be this year.

With the game gone for now, real world reality hits, and I am reminded on how fragile life is. I thought I had it all figured out when I was a kid, I swore I did, by 42 I thought I would be a millionaire, a successful pompous shit don't stink business man. Thankfully that didn't didn't happen as I grew up, but now without the distraction of softball, problems are piling all at once and everything that bothers me, I got it bottled up, I think I'm bottoming out as I've been drinking alone lately

thinking about what the fuck do I have to do to get on solid ground.

When looking for a new team in softball, it's important you hook up with a guy running the team that is honest as you don't want to waste your time. This person (manger, captain, sponsor, teammate, etc) should let you know off the bat what your role is. For example:

Competition is open - earn your spot
Your a forfeit avoider no matter what
You play/pitch/dh one game no matter what
You pay you play
I just want you to play so I can get a ride

If the guy running the team is not in sync with your goals forget it. Same thing in the real world when it comes to job recruiters. I understand recruiters only get paid if they can place you, but most of them are low life liars and bullies. Unfortunately, when conducting a job search they usually are a necessary evil. I deal with them every single day and because the market is so bad many of them flex and power trip on job seekers every single chance they get. Assholes

I'm not about to give up, I don't wanna quit, but shit, I feel like when I deal with these people this is fucking sick. This is not a game, this is real life and they don't give a fuck I've sacrificed everything I have to get to the professional level that I am at, so I have have to swallow my pride and hold my tongue every time they snap even though I know this is so fucking whack.

In dealing with these people I reminded of the old John Travolta Movie "Boy in the Plastic Bubble"

as I'm trapped. I'm forced to remember how fragile economic things are right now and I am forced to acquiesce to their demands. I try and give them everything wand and more, even tough I can't stand their fucking ass. I feel like a hypocrite, but I know I have to keep a level head intact and adapt.

All good players adapt in softball and life, its crucial to survival. You can't do the same thing all the time otherwise the bubble will burst. Play the game

At 6-5 the Jets

only sin is mediocrity (Martha Graham) as they seem to have their sights on earning the worse record you can have in the NFL - Ocho Ocho (8-8). So far they have just been a streaky team that regresses to the mean. Plain old Average.When you go to a game your happy and hyped at the tailgate

but once you get inside their lackluster and stupid play just puts you to apathetic sleep

and makes you lose focus on the game at hand

as you are resolved to the grim reality of mediocrity. The number one target of the fans venom is poster boy and QB Marc Sanchez

Sanchez is a maddening/frustrating player

but the truth is he is not the biggest problem. They have holes all over:

No pass rush - none
Below average Safeties
Mediocre Linebackers (except Harris)
Special Teams once a strong point has been terrible lately
Average Offensive Line
Average Running Backs

but no matter if Sanchez throws two, three

or even four Td's in a game

the fans are still not happy

as he always gets blamed. It comes with the QB territory I guess, but to be fair he's also average at this stage of his career. In any case, they have five games left and unless they get their act together soon Ocho Ocho seems like their destiny. No one should inspire to be average especially at the prices they charge as they owe it to the fans to rise above mediocrity.

Recently another group of supposedly "Super Powered" congressional beings
adopted "Failure is Not an Option"as their slogan. But guess what, the so-called super committee in Congress failed to reach a deal to cut the U.S. federal budget deficit by $1.2 trillion over 10 years and the stock market has been taken a beating ever since. No super hero I grew up with would yell "Failure is an option". Nothing super about these guys. Nothing at all.

I've never been an advocate of committees in Softball

,but in Democracy their very existence is essential "for the people by the people". But this super committee's glaring failure to agree on budget cuts is disturbing and irresponsible. It's the same back and forth bullshit that gets us nowhere. Democrats blast Republicans for not being more receptive to higher taxes and unwilling to phase out the Bush-era tax cuts for upper-income Americans, while Republicans insist Democrats are unwilling to make necessary spending cuts to popular domestic programs. Pathetic blame game.

President Obama has made it clear that he's sick of this committee's bullshit as he would veto any attempt to undo or alter the automatic spending cuts, known as a sequester mechanism. "The only way these spending cuts will not take place is if Congress gets back to work and agrees on a balanced plan to reduce the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion, that's the job they promised to do. And they've still got a year to figure it out."Obama also sought to reassure markets and ratings agencies that even without an agreement by the special committee, the automatic cuts now scheduled to occur mean significant deficit reduction steps will take place."One way or another, we will be trimming the deficit by at least $2.2 trillion over the next 10 years,"

That didn't stop markets from tanking and our old sweater around the neck wearing rating agency analyst Bob

from gloating and earning himself a free Turkey
on Thanksgiving for giving our government a Turkey Rating. Congrats Bob.

The ratings agency Standard & Poor's issued a statement that said the "super" committee's failure to reach agreement would not bring a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, as long as the resulting automatic spending cuts remain intact. Thanks guys. I'm glad you recognized that you now understand that you fuck all of us back in August when you downgraded the U.S after years of looking the other way and getting us into this mess to begin with. Oh well at least your employee Bob got a Turkey.

for the last 3 seasons I have been playing early Saturday morning fall ball with him in Staten Island. We have always had a good team but unfortunately we were the Buffalo Bills
of Softball as we lost twice in heartbreak fashion in the finals.

This year we were undefeated in the regular season and won game one of the championship last week. In game two today we lost 1-0... fucking painful. In game three we were down 4-1 in the 6th and then exploded to win 10-4 and got the monkey off our back. Now that is fucking blog worthy.

A few weeks ago I experienced a first, I went to a Rutgers college football game (free tickets of course). Having grown in the Northeast where college football isn't very popular I was never a fan of Saturday gridiron action, but I was opened minded and pleasantly surprised at the level of enthusiasm, energy, spirit, and competition. Despite this pleasant event my Northeast biased toward college football did not change for several reasons:

No matter what they say NCAA football is a business. I hate it when they say shit like "best interest of the university and student-athlete". Stop. They don't charge over $100 a ticket for charity, they want to get paid.
No playoff systems, polls are used instead. They have stuck with the Bowl system for years b/c it's a money maker instead of creating a playoff system to crown a true champion. Wack
Like all sports its ruthless and cutthroat. Everyone wants to win. Winning leads to more money from alumni. advertisers, and TV Networks. I have no problem with wanting to win, but what I do have a problem with is they pretend they have morals. They are a bunch of Phonies

This week this phoniness was exposed yet again as arguably college football flagship program, Penn State, the blueprint for how intercollegiate sports was supposed to work, a harmonious balance of academics and athletics that ensures players would be better men when they left became the Great Cover-up. It was revealed the disgusting and heinous crime of child abuse/rape by one of it's coaches in 2002 was covered up. Nothing was done about it. Nothing. Fucking Sick

Sorry there is no excuse for gross indifference. Heads must roll for this and they have. Penn State's "Trustees" issued the following statement ""We thought that because of the difficulties that engulfed our university -- and they are great -- it was necessary for us to make a change in the leadership and to set a course for new direction," said Penn State board of trustees vice chairman John Surma, chairman and CEO of U.S. Steel.

"The university is much larger than its athletic programs."
Yeah now they do something - Phonies. Don't know why those guys are called Trustees because I don't trust them. In fact they are not trust worthy at all as the only reason they are on that board is because they donate a lot of money to the school. This was sad and yet again another example of how the NCAA is hypocritical, corrupt, phony. After this horrific incident the NCAA should be punished and have their name changed to PCAA - Phony Collegiate Athletic Association.

The "Trustees" fired pretty much everyone including head coaching legend Joe Paterno who should have done more and he now realizes it. "This is a tragedy," Paterno said in the statement.

"It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

It's too late for apologies.

8-5-B-3 Humbled

I umped a playoff game yesterday:

Situation: Score tied bottom of the 7th, one out runners on first and second
Ump Crew: One man job - me
Play: Ground ball to short where there is an error but the ball stays in the infield. On his way to 3B, the runner on second collides with the third baseman (between second and third) . The third base coach yells obstruction and sends runner home, where the runner is out by at least 10-20 feet.
My Initial Call: I did see the obstruction, but there was no play at third during the obstruction, I followed the play and called the guy out at home. After the play, the offensive team came out and argued that the runner should have been awarded home due to obstruction and game over. The Defensive team did not argue.

Talk about your crunch time messes.

My Decision: As an ump you can never show indecision or weakness as the sharks smell blood. After the play I made the following ruling : "Dead Ball. Runner goes back to third. Bases loaded and one out. In my judgement the runner would not have scored because of the obstruction, he was only interfered going to third, not rounding going to home and the ball was in the infield. The coach only sent him home because he thought he was dealing with free money (safe b/c of the obstruction).

I informed both teams that if they wanted to protest do so now and play will resume now. No protest was filed. My intentions were good, I couldn't end a game, much less a playoff game that way.

Next Play : Long shot over a drawn in Outfield. Game over

When I went home I researched my ruling in the ASA Rule Book and came up with the right call in under Rule 8 Section 5 Clause B, Point 3 (8-5-B-3) which states

"If the obstructed runner is put out after passing the base which would have been reached had there been no obstruction or advanced beyond the two bases were the obstruction occurred:
EFFECT: The obstructed runner will be called out. the ball remains live.

I also reached out to Inwood's head umpire and other officials they acknowledged it was a tough one man call, but the runner should have been called out.

I was wrong.Fuck

Most people wouldn't admit their mistake, but I always try and face the truth. I know I didn't cost the team the game because the defensive team wasn't even upset as they had key defensive breakdowns and took responsibility/ownership for their play. It does go to show you how important two umpires are at playoff time as crazy shit happens. Ironically, both teams agreed to one ump before the playoffs.

was an exception.

He died Friday night, only a month after delivering his 1,097th and final televised commentary. One his best quotes was "I obviously have a knack for getting on paper what a lot of people have thought and didn't realize they thought, And they say, Hey, yeah!' And they like that."

Rooney opinions occasionally got him in trouble, but he was always honest toward his audience and more importantly to himself. He said he probably hadn't said anything on "60 Minutes" that most of his viewers didn't already know or hadn't thought. "That's what a writer does," he said. "A writer's job is to tell the truth." He was grumpy, blunt, rude, obnoxious, but when it came to the Truth he never let me down.

He will be missed and I vow to keep his journalistic commitment to truth alive.

I've been asked a lot recently "Why so much economy and politics in your blogs? I mean dude your supposed to write about softball". The answer can be found in every new post I send out: "It's more than just a game"

I'm a little sicker than most as I see a lot of parallels between softball-life, and the recent unprecedented political/economic issues in our country clearly impact the readers of this page. So let's get down to business as I have no time to play around, everyone knows I've always prided myself as softball's most purest, rawest, and hardest known artist, and when I see the game in a state of 911 I write a story to promote awareness and inspire thought. Sometimes you have to unlearn what you have learned and take a multi-pronged approach, tackling different issues one step at a time.

Dimon recommends taking control with a new "Marshall Plan," that would fix the national economy and get people working again. One of the first places to start, he said, is fixing an antiquated tax code. Major companies and small businesses are paralyzed by uncertainty because of future tax policy and pending regulation. I agree, we need to create advantages for starting and maintaining existing business because it will restore confidence in entrepreneurs and get the economic engine going again.

Football does have a clock.

Time does matter in football.

The game is 60 minutes and limited to four fifteen minute quarters.

Getting off to bad starts is not only an uphill battle against your opponent, but you also have to battle time. Each and every week my beloved goon team, The Jets, get of to a slow start. They haven't played four good quarters all year. It is a reflection on the coaching staff as to why this team comes out flat on both sides of the ball in each and every week. Shottenheimer isn't exactly Bill Walsh in terms of scripting plays and Rex vaunted D isn't exactly swarming.

Softball Grapes of Wrath

John Steinbeck was Nobel-Prize winner for literature, as he wrote classics like East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath. When I was in school I read them all, good shit. My favorite is Of Mice and Men but today the famous line from The Grapes of Wrath comes to my mind:

"I know this... a man got to do what he got to do."

dropped the first October snowfall on NYC since 1952 on us.

We've been blessed in Inwood this fall as we have not been rained out. Hell I guess we still haven't been rained out as this technically this is a snow out. There's a softball first for everything I guess.

This inclement weather is forcing us to the following tough but fair decisions:

Playoffs start next week
Most teams could only play 12 games, some less. Sucks but its the best we can do to make sure we complete the playoffs
At least all teams in both leagues had already made the playoffs. Except one.

That except one is where "a league's gotta do what a league's gotta do" comes in as three teams are alive for the 6th seed in the afternoon league :

Rays 4-7
Dodgers 2-9
Bombers 2-10

We've made the following tough, but fair, decision for the league based on records, field availability, schedule , and match ups.

League Ruling for 6th Spot : There will be a special Saturday play in series between the Rays and Dodgers, where the Rays only needed to win one game and the Dodgers need to win 3 games. If at any point the Rays win one game, no other games will be played that day.

This decision was based on the following logic:

The Rays and Dodgers must play again as they have only played once and are currently in 6th and 7th place, respectively
Even though the Bombers and Rays haven't played all year they have been eliminated because (1) have played 12 games already (2) have the poorest run differential factor, (3) and cannot win five games under any scenario which is the win total most likely needed (in most scenarios) to qualify for the post season.
If we let the Dodgers and Rays play only one game and then schedule a Bomber-Ray match up, then we would be running the risk that the Bombers would come to the park for nothing, if the Rays are victorious. That is a waste of time.
The Dodgers week 7 opponent, Los Bizcocheros cannot play next Saturday.
Bottom line : We just don't have enough fields and time for a 14 game schedule and are going to let the 6th and 7th seeds fight it out.

The Bombers are not happy as to again quote Steinbeck from the Grapes of Wrath "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." , but considering the circumstances it was the best we could do for everyone involved. You can not make everyone happy, you just have to be fair and realistic.

"No one knows what it means but it's provocative" .. to reinforce their songs stimulating, aggressive, vexing, and suggestive nature.

A provocative Ball So Hard theme in softball that many leagues face is what type of ball to use. You never want to play with a soft/bad/old ball as it has a major impact on the quality of the game.

In the city a common ball choice is the clincher F12

vs the Gold

Most leagues use the F12 for a combination of the reasons below:

Ball density - F12 is softer
Safety
Field type - closed, open, game crossover
Pitching Style

The Gold is a harder ball, travels farther and hence, is hitter friendly/popular. Most pitcher's prefer/love the F12 for all the opposite reasons. However, recently I caught up with top open pitcher Carl Costantino in Staten Island

and he looked beyond the obvious and cleverly his pitcher's take on why the F12 is a better ball

Yesterday I was standing where in the on deck circle, where I was supposed to be, when the batter swung, missed, and then accidentally let go of the bat. The bat hit me dead in the face. In the Face!!!
I was only six to eight feet away.

Crazy

The best way I could describe it is "it was like getting punched on your chin at full force when your not looking". I was in complete shock and disbleief.

Both teams and the official rushed to my aide immediately. Thank you guys.

My teammates, the Trojans, tried to take me out but I refused b/c I did not feel dizzy or have concussion like sysptoms. More importantly, I felt I needed to play as it was helping me clear my mind and get over the trauma.

I stayed in teh game for 3 innings, but in the Outfield I felt/tasted blood from inside my mouth. Upon visiable inspection I was told I had a deep nasty ugly gash inside my mouth, was removed from teh game, and needed to go the emergency room. Being the stubborn bastard I am I stayed till the end of the game and then drove home to meet my wife.

She took me to Jersey City Christ Hospital where I was admitted to the emergency room

and treated so well. They run a Great Hospital and emergency room. My wife was awesome throughout the whole event, she even did her homework

Only needed 5 dissolve-able stitches inside my mouth.

No Broken jaw or teeth.

I got so Lucky - as no solid food for a couple of days is nothing to what could have happened

But the truth is we are just all viewing the other side of the mirror. That person across from you on the field just wants the same thing - To Win. Now how they try to win is probably what irks you and when they win it really pisses you off. God forbid they would use your favorite bat or glove to beat you. That would be hell.

Unfortunately, in the real world villains do exist and sometimes they do win. This week a mortal villain lost more than just a game. He lost his life. As longtime dictator of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed following the capture of his hometown of Sirte. There were confusing reports of Gaddafi's capture and death, and questions remained over exactly how he was killed but now it has come to light hat he was killed with his favorite golden pistol.
Gaddafi was carrying the golden pistol when he was captured by Transitional National Council (TNC) fighters in a sewage pipe outside his hometown of Sirte on Thursday, following a NATO airstrike on his convoy, an official told The (London) Times. "Gaddafi was first captured by rebels from the east," the source said. "Then the Misrata group showed up to take him. The eastern rebels didn't like this and the soldier pulled Gaddafi's golden gun and shot him, telling the Misrata guys, 'You can have him now'." Cold. Talk about what goes around comes around.

Francessa wouldn't leave it at that and Revis and the Jets hung up on him. I say good shit. I'm glad they did as I am sick of Francessa bullying and antagonizing attitude toward goon fans/callers

I am the first to admit the 3-3 Jets have been playing poorly and I'm down for honest criticism, but in this interview Francessa over stepped his bounds. I can't listen to him talk about the Jets anymore because he has taken his hate for the team to a personal level.Unprofessional.

Instead of being hung up on a play that really no one cares or is stressing about/over, Francessa should be looking more closely at their upcoming opponent the 4-1 San Diego Chargers. At face value everyone sees a 4-1 team and automatically makes them some powerhouse. but be careful because in teams sports like football, softball, etc, records can be deceiving. The Charger schedule has been soft - wins over Minnesota, Miami, KC, and the Chargers are nothing to brag about.

This game is the litmus test for Jets, analyst should focus on asking questions like can they score? pressure Rivers? instead of getting hung up on the past.

President Barack Obama

announced a nearly complete withdrawal of American military forces from Iraq by the end of the year.
"Today, I can report that as promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home from Iraq at the end of this year," Obama said. "After nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over. Over the next two months our troops in Iraq--tens of thousands of them--will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home."

Obama affirmed that he has been in talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and that the Iraqi government supported the American withdrawal. "We are in full agreement about how to move forward," Obama said.Although it was extended several times, the timeline for withdrawal was originally drafted under former President George W. Bush and implementing it was a key campaign promise for Obama when he was running for president in 2007 and 2008.

The military will keep about 160 servicemen and women in Baghdad to provide security for the embassy there. Since the invasion in 2003, the war has claimed the lives of 4,478 American service members.

Tipping PItches

Pitchers and catchers don't tell the hitter what pitch is about to be thrown b/c the element of surprise is to their advantage. However, sometimes inadvertently they send signals concerning the location or type of pitch about to be thrown, this is called tipping pitches "TP". It may be something in the pitcher's posture, position on the rubber, how he holds or moves his glove, ball grip, or even some aspect of his pitching motion. Catcher's can be "TP" culprits as well by setting up way too early or falling in love with certain pitches or locations. The opposition is always on the lookout for "TP" b/c smart batters, runners, or coaches want to know what is coming and gain an edge .

In business "making a pitch" is an expression to describe an attempt to promote or sell someone or something with the goal of generating revenue. Generally, you don't "tip" your hand (sales pitch) for several reasons like :

The Competition - don't want them knowing what your up to until it's too late
Product Knowledge
Timing - seasonal , hourly, economic, etc
Target Market needs

Some players and businesses don't care if they tip their pitches because they are simply too good or arrogant about their abilities and fear no competition. Well today I am going to go against the book as well and tip my advertising blog pitch. I do this not from over-confidence or narcissism, but rather because I want it to work for everyone. When I say everyone, I mean everyone. Me. My sponsors. My readers. This is a community. I have a responsibility to it and myself.

You see this forum has evolved over the years, at first I took a Dave Chappelle approach to the blog. Chappelle was brilliant on his show, but he suddenly quit in the 3rd season at the height of its popularity after breaking up with his longtime writing partner, Neal Brennan. You see Dave and Neal always wrote/did the show like no one else was watching they just fed off of each others creativity and sheer comedy genius resulted. When the networks started demanding that Dave be funny he quit. I always write all my blogs with one softball target in mind, my longtime partner and friend Juan "Blonde " Moreiras (seen below in his Fidel outfit )he's taught me most of what I know about softball and life and if I captured his attention then I knew I was on point. That's still true but this blog has become more, much more, as now I have connected with some many people by using the sport I love to engage readers in a conversation about life.

On Monday the Jets

won a listless game 24-6 over their hated and 0-5 pathetic rival, the Miami Dolphin, better Luck

next year.

On a night where the Jets inducted players into their Ring of Honor and got a much needed win
they didn't earn any honor or respect among their fans as their performance was lackluster. Check that we have one player who deservedly was introduced last

who was worth the price of admission - Darrelle Revis - who in terms of greatness is truly alone on Jet Goon Island. Right now without him the team is mediocre at best.

The offense is a joke. We went 3 and out on 4 straight drives. Pathetic. Should have fired Brian Schottenheimer one year early rather than one year too late
Offensive line played better but Sanchez was out of sync and running game below average
Plaxico is off to a slow start - He's invisible. He better get it together soon or go back to D-Block
The defense puts little QB pressure and isn't swarming
Special Teams have been good. Not perfect but good

At 3-3 we are in the middle of the pack with the explosive Chargers coming into town. We are like 31st in total 1st downs this year. Horrible. We've beaten the Chargers several times the last few years, but their kicker Nate Kaeding is out for the year so we can't rely on him to miss game winning kicks against us anymore. Time to progress, not regress anymore. If we don't play better Revis will indeed be alone on an Island.

Tonight I'm going to Jets-Dolphins Monday Night Football showdown

where the Jets season is unquestionably on the line versus our win less rivals, who you know are treating this nationally televised game as their Super Bowl. Definitely, worthy of a Primetime spot.

This being an ESPN Monday night game, I can't help but think about the network's recent action versus Hank Williams. For years one of my favorites parts of Monday Night football was the beginning where singer Hank Williams would sing "Are You Ready for Some Football"

The guy was fun, a good performer, and got you pumped up for the game.

Why it's more than Just a Game

Central Park closed this week, but before it did I was reminded about what made it special as I ran across some exchange student's

playing softball for pretty much the 1st time

and it was cool seeing them enjoy the game.

Perhaps one of the best parts about baseball/softball I enjoy is the diversity, as you can be black, white, tall, short, fat, skinny, rich or poor and the game still has a place for you. Diversity is what make it more than just a game as you meet people and learn things you never would have if the sport didn't exist.

It's up to you to become a better player, but if you are around the game long enough you just might be lucky enough to meet the right people and become a better person.

Thomas Wagner (left) , but the man's bio is truly impressive. He won a prime time Emmy for producing and writing, "Finding Lucy", a film biography about the television comedienne, Lucille Ball for the PBS series, American Masters.

His script for that film was nominated as Best Documentary Script, 2001 by the Writers Guild of America. He co-produced and co-wrote the American Masters production of "Rod Serling: Submitted for Your Approval", which won a Bronze plaque at the Columbus Film Festival along with a Cine Gold Eagle. That script was also nominated for a Writer's Guild of America award for Best Documentary Script, 1995.

Mr. Wagner recently received another Emmy nomination for the score he composed for Patrick. Patrick was the second film in a trilogy that also included his scores for Reluctant Saint: Francis of Assisi and the recently aired Joan of Arc: Child of War, Soldier of God. The music for all three films was performed by Hesperus, the celebrated early music trio. The trilogy was produced for the Hallmark Channel.

For the past twenty-five years, Mr. Wagner has composed, arranged and produced scores for numerous films which have aired on public and commercial television. He scored the Emmy winning American Masters film biography of Lucille Ball. He also composed the score for "Daughter of the Bride" which aired on HBO and which garnered an Academy Award nomination. I had to see for myself and try to understand the situation that they are in

To sum it up I felt like it was a camp for survivors of a war, people who have lost everything. It reminded me of a mix of Woodstock and the old NY where the homeless people used to live all over the village.

I met Christopher Guerra, an artist and Occupy Wall Street protester from Newark, N.J.,

While I was there Mr Guerra (unique but peaceful guy) and a fellow protester was almost attacked for no reason by some crazy right winger

It was a surreal experience as I was somewhat placed in their shoes, felt their pain, the road ahead will be difficult, but not impossible. This movement is far from perfect and may not accomplish everything it seeks to accomplish, but I applaud them for at least letting the world know that change is needed, that the recession is far from over, and people need help.

I know I quote Eminem a lot, but to paraphrase him

"I took my bruises, took my lumps , Fell down and I got right back up
But I need that spark to get psyched back up , In order for me to pick work up

In softball I have enjoyed some nice comeback moments this year, but a greater challenge awaits me as I've been trying to engineer my own comeback in my hometown of NYC recently, but the results so far have not been beautiful. Their have been some nibbles, some conversations, some phone calls, but for the most part dead ends.

The recent Occupy Wall Street Movement

shows that like me people are hurting and angry

The Movement began on September 17, with only a few hundred people speaking out about corporate greed and inequality, but has grown larger and more coordinated. Large labor unions, including the AFL-CIO and SEIU, have joined in. When new arrivals turn out, volunteers swiftly equip them with donated sleeping bags and food. Dozens of cities nationwide have launched their own "occupy" protests in solidarity. It reminds you that there's still humanity, and that people are inherently good.

You don’t have to live in New York to be fed up with Wall Street. Now, the “Occupy Wall Street” movement has found its way to Jersey City. About 100 protesters gathered Thursday afternoon along the waterfront in the city’s financial sector outside Goldman Sachs offices. Employees who were outside the building before Thursday’s protest began said they had been told not to comment. The Man is still the Man I see, fucking cold hearted bastards. Meanwhile, an Occupy Philadelphia is slated to launch Thursday, joining protests in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Denver and Chicago, among other cities. People are protesting corporation control of our government and it's getting ugly as hundreds of people have been arrested.

The latest protests come after Wednesday’s large-scale event in Lower Manhattan, which featured clashes between police and protesters. New video surfaced showing police clashing with protesters in a night of explosive emotions. The scuffle started after police say demonstrators began spilling over barricades. With thousands of protesters chanting and yelling, police pressed up against barriers say they were forced to use pepper spray and batons to "calm" part of the frenzied crowds. The video is inflammatory but police point out they are allowed to use batons and pepper spray for crowd control purposes. Police arrested 28 people, mostly for disorderly conduct. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said this is a city that values people’s right to say what they want to say, but he had a warning. “There just is a standard of conduct…a line you can’t cross,” said Bloomberg on Thursday. He said you can’t charge police officers. A reporter asked, “How concerned are you that the type of skirmishes that happened last night may escalate as this movement continues to grow?” Bloomberg answered, “I don’t think that it will escalate and I think our police department conducted themselves the way they should. Every cop? I don’t know. There will always be somebody that’s got some piece of footage.” As for if there is any way to resolve the protests, Bloomberg said, “There’s no leadership, one group that’s leading or whatever. What I can tell you is this is the place where you can protest.”

I have to say Bloomberg is consistent as he is always looking to beat up the little guy - Asshole. Big Time Asshole

The protest have drawn some criticism for its lack of concrete goals. But the fact that Occupy Wall Street is still going strong 19 days later means it's done what it set out to do: Draw focus to the concerns -- and anger -- many Americans have about the country's growing economic gap, plant the seed of an organized voice, and let the protest evolve naturally. I am embarrassed I haven't gone yet, next week I am gonna stop by and get some footage b/c these people are to be commended for having the balls and courage to stand up to the Man.

What's Bob up to now let's see :

Recruiting Bob ??? Really??? Really ??? Bullshit

It was the incompetence and corruption by S&P and its peers, Fitch and Moody's, that played a pivotal role in our financial meltdown that cost Americans $3.4 trillion in retirement savings, triggered the Great Recession with its massive business failure and job losses, and consequently caused the explosion of our national debt. They were all in on it. All of them. They were just a bunch of yes men.

This complicity bred the kind of incompetence that was on full display the day S&P downgraded our government's credit rating in August. Within minutes, Treasury Department analysts identified a $2 trillion dollar error in S&P's calculations. But instead of admitting its error, S&P simply came up with other reasons to justify its downgrade. Why? Well, the rating agencies have an enormous stake in intimidating the federal government. I welcome the news that the Justice Department has launched an investigation into S&P, I imagine it will conclude what a lot of us have long known: S&P made record profits by knowingly handing out sterling credit ratings to complete junk.

Much like a bad sports team they need to clean house and learn how to recruit. I quote a fellow industry colleague when he says

"The rating agencies as a whole kill me. They should be bowing and scraping, begging for forgiveness. They should be operating at a net profit of $0 for the next 10 years while they put all money back into hiring talent, beefing technology, etc. Until they are THE place to work, as in you know smart people are doing really awesome things and getting paid well to do them, then they’re a joke. And, yes, their prices should go up and the market should have to bear the burden. Also, the competition should be who has the tightest ratings (as measured by current and historical results) and most aggressive and innovative forensics, not who gives the lowest price. Choosing between the big 3 rating agencies right now is no different than choosing between Equifax, Experian, or Trans Union for your credit report – do you really even give a thought or care which it is? No differentiation."

"Another analogy I thought of after I’d already pressed send is this: When your you’re in the home buying process and you’re looking for a home inspector, do you ask for the cheapest or do you ask around for a good one? Somebody who is tough, really looks under the “hood” of the house, notes everything about the house to you, good and bad (new roof, old water heater), etc? I guarantee you that guy isn’t the cheapest and isn’t even trying to compete in that space. He’s trying to be the best damn home inspector out there and if you want the cheap guy, then by all means pay him and expect to get what you paid for. Don’t cry 2 years later when the termites he missed eat your basement stairs. There is a market for both, but all the rating agencies did for years was go for cheap, not best. If you want a great inspector for your personal home, shouldn’t you want the very best for 10,000 homes backing your AAA bond?"

This bullshit downgrade and the subsequent debt crisis in Europe led the stock market (Dow) to fall 12% in the last quarter, marking its worst quarterly performance since the first quarter of 2009. fought through pain and injury to help lead and inspire LAWYERTIME "LT"

to the NY Fast Pitch Championship!!!!!!!!! I knew we were going to win when I got to the park extra early at 4:30 pm (for a 5:30 pm game) and already saw him running sprints in the outfield. No doubt - sheer bruto strength. That's what winners do - Mind over Matter.

I was his drug dealer as he popped two ibubrofen's, was good to go, and with the deciding game three in the balance, Lou 22 blasted a massive triple. As he rounded the bases he grabbed his hamstring which stirred memories of another great post season hero

That hit set the stage for a three run inning that gave LT an insurmountable 4-0 lead to bring home the title, wipe away 2 years of underachieving and put us back on top. Lou 22 had the following to say afterwards " Thanks. It is now worth it, pain and all. Season Over and a Championship to get us through the winter. Just feels so good"

Backed by this excellent defense, John Brown had a no hitter until the 7th, but that's when things got dramatic as the Master Batters loaded the bases with one out, but an exciting game ending double play sealed the victory and set off a wild and fun post game celebration

Well yesterday the Classic Big Apple Central Park "CP" Championship series between West and Choice Parts was cancelled by the the CP conservancy as the fields were deemed "too wet" and/or being re-sodded. Thus, no games were played. Very disappointing.

Well a high ranking source in the Big Apple league has come forward on the condition we keep his identity hidden to shed light on this unfortunate chain of events.

When I was younger I hated

as all it meant to me was that football was over and that show with all these old people was coming on.
However, as I have gotten older I've grown to appreciate it especially grouchy Andy Rooney

Softball in NY/NJ takes on the wonderful diversity that this part of the country has to offer. After years of working for the Man I met a lot of good people, but unfortunately I also met a ton of conservative, tight, generic, pompous assholes who all try to be the same or worse are afraid to be different. The last several years I have worked from home and have been able to play in some day time softball leagues where I've played with and against actors, writers, doorman, musicians, waiters, and artist. I am a better man/person for it.

Another Imperfect Sports Hero

I never had the Mr Perfect types like Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Nolan Ryan, Tony Gywnn as my sports hero's. Instead I've had the very morally flawed Keith Hernandez, Mark Gastineau, Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, and Benard King's of the world as "my sports guy/idol". Jose Reyes definitely falls into the category of imperfect types. Everyone knows Jose plays "loco" style and his on field celebration/act (hot dog) annoys the other team, but I

have been one of his staunches defenders over the years b/c of his talent, passion for the game, energy, and the fact he has never been an off the field problem (good/nice guy). However, on what could quite possibly be his last day as a Met and the day he achieved his greatest personal achievement - Batting Champion - he disappointed me and all Met fans.
Reyes asked out of the game in the bottom of the 1st after leading of the game with a bunt single that virtually assured him of a batting title. I love Reyes, as he is by far and away my favorite Met, but this wrong on so many levels.

#1 It makes him look selfish

#2 The Only reason any Met fan went to a game these last 2 months was to see him play.
Evidence of that is this video of the game I went to on Tuesday and sat their for 13 fucking innings to watch him play brilliantly

b/c I knew this might be it for him in NY. Yesterday's Reyes decision (modern ball player) goes to show you that sports is a business were statistics, awards, and money always take a back seat to the fan.

Losing Reyes for Met fans will be the worse free agent loss since Strawberry 21 years ago (Darryl was better but Jose nicer guy) and like Strawberry his replacement will take years to find. Despite this incident and his flaws I hope we can keep him as he is part of the solution not he problem.. even though he is not perfect by nay stretch of the imagination

Classic song from his heart, saying he will do what he loves till he collapses.

Collapse is an ugly word in baseball/softball. Currently two of NYC''s biggest baseball rivals are on the verge of historic regular season collapses. The Red Sox have lost 17 of 22 and blown a 9 game lead in the Wild Card in September. That has never been done.

Never.

Not the 2007 Mets ( We all slowly & painfully lived through that )

Not the 1964 Phillies.

Nobody.

The Sox have given away their lead and are now tied with the Rays. The Red Sox were 82-51 on Aug. 27. They were three games behind the Phillies for the best record in baseball. One month later, they're a pack of zombies.

The Braves aren't much better as they are still clinging to a once-comfortable lead in the wild-card race. They have lost their third straight and seventh in the last 10. Their September record dropped to 9-16, nearly wiping out a margin that had been 8 1/2 games just three weeks ago. There are two games left in the regular season and they lead by one game.

I would be remiss to not mention famous post season collapses like the 1986 Red Sox (no details needed) , 1996 Braves (blew 2-0 WS lead at home) , 2001 Oakland A's (blew 2-0 lead in the best of five) , 2003 Chicago Cubs (Blew 3-1 lead at home how can we forget Steve Bartman???), and the most famous post season collapse the 2004 Yankees (3-0 lead ... ughhhhh).

The other day I hit 3 straight huge pot holes while driving and lost control of my car - very scary and that's what a baseball/softball collapse is - an accident you are powerless to stop. The worst part of a collapse is that you aren't trying to win anymore, instead you are trying to Avoid Embarrassment. That's a sure fire recipe for failure.

Right now I am caught in a mini softball collapse as once cruising Lawyertime "LT" http://softballinsider.blogspot.com/2011/09/2-out-madness-for-lt-stem-cell.html has been distracted with apathy, injuries, scheduling http://softballinsider.blogspot.com/2011/09/softballs-version-of-lucy-and-charlie.html, poor play and excuses and dropped game 2 of the championship to the Master Batters 11-1. The game was played over 2 days (a 4-1 continuation), but 11-1 is 11-1. A 1-0 series lead isn't quite as epic of a collapse as those mentioned above, but clearly a clear shift of momentum in the wrong direction.

To myself and all my teammates, all I have to say is We just have to do this ourselves, no excuses, no apathy, as the late great Freddy Mercury so eloquently sang

This team feeds on emotion and I know it's corny but I know we will RECOVER and do what we love next week until we collapse one way or another.
